“Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says.
Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” – James 1:22 NLT
As a TRUE follower of Jesus, we must not only listen the
word of God; we ought to do them as well, for faith without works is dead. (James
2:17) This is because it is not just some kind of history, for:
The word of God is alive and
active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing
soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the
heart. (Hebrews
4:12)
This means that it is for ANY people, for:
He predestined us for adoption to
sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will. All
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and
training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly
equipped for every good work. (Ephesians
1:5, 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of
the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you
in my absence, I will know that you stand FIRM in the one Spirit, striving
together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way
by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed,
but that you will be saved—and that by God. (Philippians
1:27-28)
Therefore, let’s REALLY be the servant of God by diving into
the word of God; let’s NOT only be the hearers of the word, but let’s be doers
of the word as well:
Don’t just listen to God’s word.
You MUST do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if
you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a
mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you
look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it
says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. (James
1:22-25)
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts
them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain
came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house;
yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock [Jesus].” (Matthew
7:24-26)
