“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children
and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us
as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” – Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV
Even though following God’s examples are going to be hard, we
should follow them, for we are going to have a GREAT outcome at the end (see
2 Corinthians 4:16-17) as Jesus tells us in Matthew
16:24-25: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up
their cross and follow me. For whoever
wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will
find it.” However, this is mainly because He is our heavenly Father (Ephesians
4:6); and we are the children of God (1
John 3:1)!
If the world hates you, keep
in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you
as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out
of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A
servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will
persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They
will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who
sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they
would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever
hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done
among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As
it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this
is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’
(John
15:18-25)
Therefore, since “God is spirit, and his worshipers must
worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John
4:24), we OUGHT to change our desires from the flesh into the Spirit – “Those
who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians
5:24-25); in order to follow God properly – “I will give them singleness of
heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn
heart and give them a tender, responsive heart, so they will obey my decrees
and regulations. Then they will truly be my people, and I will be their God.” (Ezekiel
11:19-20)
And since Jesus calls us to be the light of the world (Matthew
5:14), then let’s be the light of the world by following Christ, the image
of LIVING God (Colossians
1:15):
Whoever wants to be my disciple MUST
deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to
save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their
soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? For the Son of Man is
going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward
each person according to what they have done. (Matthew
16:24-27)
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of
God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to
God—this is your TRUE and PROPER worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this
world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be
able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect
will. (Romans
12:1-2)
