“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true
worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the
kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must
worship in the Spirit and in truth.” – John 4:23-24 NIV
First of all, we ought to know that all of us
have been created to be children of God through faith in Jesus Christ (John 1:12-13), due to the fact that God,
our heavenly Father (Ephesians 4:6) has been creating each one
of us in His image (Genesis 1:27). However, because of this
earthly world, we have been sinning against Him without even realizing it (Romans 3:23) This is because 2 Corinthians 4:4 states, “The god of this age has blinded the minds
of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays
the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Because of this issue, Jesus
Christ was crucified on the cross as an atonement of our sins (Colossians 2:13-15) so that we are able to
be righteousness of God through Him until the end of the age (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24). The reason for this is our
heavenly Father desperately wants us back to be together with Him in the
eternal kingdom of heaven from the end of the age (John 3:16-17). This is why Jesus Christ
proclaims, “I am the way and the truth
and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know
me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen
him.” (John 14:6-7)
When Adam sinned,
sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone,
for everyone sinned. Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. But it
was not counted as sin because there was not yet any law to break. Still, everyone
died—from the time of Adam to the time of Moses—even those who did not disobey
an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. Now Adam is a symbol, a
representation of Christ, who was yet to come. But there is a great difference
between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam,
brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift
of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ. And the result of
God’s gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man’s sin.
For Adam’s sin led to condemnation, but God’s free gift leads to our being made
right with God, even though we are guilty of many sins. For the sin of this one
man, Adam, caused death to rule over many. But even greater is God’s wonderful
grace and his gift of righteousness, for all who receive it will live in
triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.
Yes, Adam’s one
sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ’s one act of righteousness
brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. Because one
person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed
God, many will be made righteous.
God’s law was
given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned
more and more, God’s wonderful grace became more abundant. So just as sin ruled
over all people and brought them to death, now God’s wonderful grace rules
instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:12-21)
Therefore, we have to crucify all of our
worldly desires and passions before we come to God in the Spirit and through
faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 5:24-25; 1 John 2:15-17, Hebrews 11:6). This is
because the word of God declares, “The
sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit
wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful
nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are
not free to carry out your good intentions.” (Galatians 5:17 NLT) Although being follower
of Jesus can be hard, we must persevere our godly lives until the end of the
age (Matthew 16:24-27). “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for
all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
(1 Timothy 4:8) Thus, for this reason, Romans 12:1-2 urges,
Therefore, I urge
you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a
living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper
worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the
renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s
will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
