‘On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus
stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and
drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water
will flow from within them.” By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who
believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been
given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.’ – John 7:37-39 NIV
Our bodies are made out of 50-60% of water,
so if anybody get less than that amount, they will probably get thirsty and
they begin to feel the need to drink specific amount of water. This kind of
water is similar to the “living water” that Jesus Christ has been talking
about. However, both of them are important to have within our bodies,
especially for those who want to follow Him and commit their lives to Him. This
is because the “living water” is the Spirit of God that is also known as the
Holy Spirit, and the Spirit makes us alive in Jesus Christ. The Spirit of God
has been poured into our hearts to guide us in walking with the Lord (John 14:15-27) when Jesus was crucified and
resurrected (John 16:7-15). This means that without the
Spirit, we are basically dead in spiritual ways due to the fact that we are
sinners (Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12) and faith without works is
useless, especially to honor the Lord. (James 2:14-26). “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ
Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) Thus, for this reason, the
word of God states,
Now there was a
Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. He
came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has
come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not
with him.”
Jesus replied, “Very
truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”
“How can someone
be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second
time into their mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered,
“Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born
of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth
to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’”
(John 3:1-7)
Therefore, we ought to overcome the world (1 John 5:1-5) and crucify our worldly
desires, in order to drink the living water that Jesus Christ has been trying
to give (Galatians 5:24-25). This is because our
sinful desires and passions seems to contradict to the will of the Spirit (Galatians 5:17). Because of this, the word
of God declares, “Do not love this world
nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the
love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical
pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and
possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this
world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who
does what pleases God will live forever. And it is impossible to please God
without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and
that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” (1 John 2:15-17, Hebrews 11:6)
Don’t be
misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you
plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay
and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will
harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what
is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t
give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to
everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. (Galatians 6:7-10)
Therefore, there is
now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ
Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin
and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the
flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a
sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous
requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to
the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Those who live
according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but
those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the
Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed
by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to
God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the
realm of the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are
not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the
Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they
do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is
subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of
righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is
living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. (Romans 8:1-11)
