“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and
the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are
many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those
who find it are few.” – Matthew 7:13-14 ESV
The world urges us to enter the wide gate
and be comfortable with living our lives. However, God, our heavenly Father (Ephesians 4:6) calls us to enter the narrow
gate, even though it is hard, which is opposite to the world’s urgency. This is
because the worldly prince’s momentum is to get us destroyed at the end of the
age, but God’s one is to resurrect and restore us back into spiritual beings
and take us to Garden of Eden, where we are supposed to belong (Genesis 1-2), due to the fact that we have
been separated from our heavenly Father once sin (Genesis 3) has been continued (Romans 5:12-14). Nonetheless, God has given
us freedom to choose the wide gate, that leads us to death, and the narrow
gate, that leads us to eternal life at the end of the age. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ
Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Even though our heavenly Father has given
us freedom—we should choose the narrow gate, even though it is hard. In
addition, God has not call us to live comfortable lives, but He has called us
to depend everything on Him like a child. This is why Jesus Christ proclaims, “Let the little children come to me, and do
not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14) Furthermore, if we are able
to earn eternal life from ourselves, than Jesus Christ’s death becomes useless
(Galatians 2:21) For this reason, we have to
remember what and why Christ Jesus was crucified for; He bore our sins on the
cross by crucifying Himself, so that we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 Peter 2:24-25) through faith in Him (Romans 10:9-10), in order to the enter our
original home (Philippians 3:20-21, 2 Corinthians 5:1). “For it is by grace you have been saved,
through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8) Overall, Jesus Christ is the
way of the truth and the life, as He pronounces, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) Because of this and we are
sinners, we have to deny our worldly desires and passions, even though they are
sometimes quite tempting. This is because the word of God declares, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have
nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and
crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the
Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” (Galatians 5:24-25)
Then Jesus said to
his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your
selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your
life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save
it. And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
Is anything worth more than your soul? For the Son of Man will come with his
angels in the glory of his Father and will judge all people according to their
deeds. (Matthew 16:24-27)
