“Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s
sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of
our sin.” – Romans 3:20 NIV
First of all, we have to know that we
became sinners because of the world (Romans 5:12) and its law that brings death.
This is why God came down from heaven into the earth as Jesus Christ (John 14:6) to crucify Himself on the cross
as atonement of our sins; to break the power of the devil that was used to be in
our minds (Colossians 2:13-15; Hebrews 2:14-15). The main reason why God
did this is to give us eternal life due to the fact that all of us are part of
His Creation (Genesis 1:27); He has created us in His own
image at the Garden of Eden. Thus, for this reason, the word of God states, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Thus, God has poured His Spirit into us to make us to do the will of God (John 14:15-17,26-27; Ezekiel 36:26-27). This is because Jesus
Christ declares, “Not everyone who says
to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the
one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) The will of God is
combination of the faith in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-9) and the works of God (Ephesians 2:10). This means that if one of
these is lacking, then we are not doing the will of God in the righteous way;
as faith without works is dead (James 2:14-26). Therefore, it is best to be
doers of God after we ensure that faith of Christ Jesus is inside of us, for
the word of God announces, “… without
faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must
believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. (Hebrews 11:6)
Don’t be
misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you
plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest
decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the
Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of
doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing
if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do
good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. (Galatians 6:7-10)
Do not love this
world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not
have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for
physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements
and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And
this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone
who does what pleases God will live forever. (1 John 2:15-17)
Overall, God, our heavenly Father (Ephesians 4:6) desperately wants to bring
us back into His eternal kingdom by letting us to obey the Spirit until the end
of the age. This is why the word of God proclaims that Jesus Christ is the way
of the truth and the life (John 14:6-7).
For God so loved
the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall
not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world
to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him
is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because
they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (John 3:16-18)
Therefore, there
is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through
Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law
of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened
by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to
be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the
righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live
according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
Those who live
according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but
those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the
Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed
by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to
God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the
realm of the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are
not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the
Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,
they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your
body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of
righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is
living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you. (Romans 8:1-11)
