“For through the law I died to the law so that I
might live for God. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer
live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do
not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through
the law, Christ died for nothing!” – Galatians 2:19-21 NIV
Like how Jesus had died for the wordly law,
we ought to die to the law as well, in order to live for God, our heavenly
Father (Ephesians 4:6) completely. In other words,
we have to destroy all of our wordly desires and passions, in order to live by the
Spirit of God for the rest of our lives (Galatians 5:24-25). This is because the
righteousness of God could not be gained through the wordly law. Thus, for this
reason, Jesus Christ was crucified on the cross for us, as the word of God
declares,
Therefore, there
is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through
Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law
of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened
by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to
be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the
righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live
according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. (Romans 8:1-4)
For God made
Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be
made right with God through Christ. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
Second of all, we ought to know that the
righteousness of God begins with the faith of Jesus Christ, since the word of
God proclaims, “For it is by grace you
have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift
of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9) However, to be completely
saved through faith, we ought to do the works of God that has already been
given us to do. For we are God’s
handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10) This is because Jesus
proclaims, “Not everyone who says to me,
‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who
does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) Thus, we must be aware to not
get confused with the faith and the works of God, and how we are being saved by
the mercy and the grace of God. For this reason, the word of God states,
At one time we too
were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and
pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But
when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because
of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through
the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us
generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by
his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a
trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who
have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.
These things are excellent and profitable for everyone. (Titus 3:3-8)
