“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one
body you were called to peace. And be thankful… the peace of God, which
transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ
Jesus.” – Colossians 3:15, Philippians 4:7 NIV
We should let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, just
like what Colossians 3:15 states. This is because by
the peace, the Lord gives us strength and He blesses us. (Psalm 29:11) This is because we are His
children (1 John 3:1). Furthermore, this means that
we should strive for the peace of God all together, for we are members of one
another in Christ. (Romans 12:4-5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
However, if we do not have the peace of Christ in our lives,
we are constantly at war with everything else even within ourselves. This is
because “we know that we are children of
God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one.” (1 John 5:19) Also, obeying God becomes burden
to us. For this reason, Jesus says:
Come to me, all you who are weary
and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from
me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)
In other words, He has given us the peace of God, which is different
from the world’s. We know this because we know that we have received the Holy
Spirit from Him to advocate us to walk with God, who is our heavenly Father. (Ephesians 4:6)
If you love me, keep my commands. And
I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you
and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept
him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he
lives with you and will be in you… the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the
Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of
everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I
do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and
do not be afraid. (John 14:15-17,26-27)
Because God has given us the peace of God through the Holy
Spirit, we should be grateful. For this reason, Colossians 3:17 declares: “And whatever you do, whether in word or
deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father
through him.” Moreover, the reason for this is that God has given us
eternal life through faith in Christ Jesus (John 17:3), even though we are sinners from
the beginning (Romans 3:23, Romans 5:12)
For the wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
Because of this, we should live only as the temporary
residents in this world (1 Peter 1:17) We could do this by overcoming
the world (1 John 5:1-5, Romans 5:1) and letting the
Holy Spirit to overflow within us (Philippians 4:7) to do the will of God
until the end of the age. (Matthew 7:21)
Do not love this world nor the
things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of
the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a
craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions.
These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is
fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases
God will live forever. (1 John 2:15-17)
Don’t be misled—you cannot mock the
justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those who live only to
satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful
nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life
from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the
right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore,
whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to
those in the family of faith. (Galatians 6:7-10)
