“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” –
Matthew 5:7-9 NIV
If we are followers of Jesus Christ and know that we are the
children of God (1
John 3:1-3 NIV), we should be pure, peaceful, and merciful in everything
that we do—since the word of God states:
We know that we are children of God
and that the world around us is under the control of the evil one.
So Prepare your minds for action
and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that
will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. So you must live
as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to
satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. But now you must be
holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. For the
Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”
Since God chose you to be the holy
people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness,
humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and
forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive
others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in
perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.
For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be
thankful. (1
John 5:19, 1 Peter 1:13-16, Colossians 3:12-15)
Overall, since Psalm
43:5 says, “Why, my soul, are you
downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet
praise him, my Savior and my God,”—we ought to put our hope in God to be
pure at all times. (1
John 3:3) This is because we belong to the kingdom of God! (Philippians
3:20-21, 2 Corinthians 5:1)
Praise be to the God and Father of
our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a
living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an
inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in
heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming
of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you
greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief
in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your
faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by
fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though
you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now,
you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for
you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls. (1
Peter 1:3-9)
This is also why Philippians
4:8 urges us to fix our thoughts:
Now, dear brothers and sisters, one
final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and
pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and
worthy of praise… Then the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians
4:8-9)
