“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there
be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and
thought.” – 1 Corinthians 1:10 NIV
If we consider ourselves as true followers of Jesus Christ and
are devoted to Him, then we should not be divided. This is because each of one
of us are members of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27). This means that we
belong to each other as well.
For just as each of us has one body
with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in
Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the
others. (Romans 12:4-5)
The human body has many parts, but
the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some
of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we
have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same
Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:12-13)
For this reason, we should be perfectly united in mind and
thought. This means that we need to be selfless, looking at other interests
above our own ones.
Therefore if you have any
encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if
any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make
my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit
and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in
humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but
each of you to the interests of the others.” (Philippians 2:1-4)
These are the reasons why communities are crucial part in
our lives. In addition, if followers of Jesus Christ stay in unity, than it has
more chance of knowing Him and being the light of Jesus to the world (John 17:20-23; Acts 2:42-47).
Let us consider how we may spur one
another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some
are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you
see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:24-25)
Consequently, you are no longer
foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also
members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets,
with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building
is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him
you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his
Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22)
