“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called
children of God.” – Matthew 5:9 NIV
If we consider ourselves children of God (1 John 3:1) by believing and accepting
Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior (John 1:12-13), then we are called to live
our lives peacefully in the presence of God, especially among others. For this reason
the word of God declares, “Let the peace
of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to
peace. And be thankful.” (Colossians 3:15) The main reasons for this
are that the world belongs to Satan, the enemy of God (1 John 5:19), and we are in the one body of
Christ Jesus (1 Corinthians 12:27) These perspectives of
life apply to us more if we know that we are children of God. (Romans 12:4-5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13) For these reasons,
the word of God states,
Therefore, as
God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive
one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord
forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all
together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:12-14)
In other words, since Jesus have said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give
you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be
troubled and do not be afraid” (John 14:27)—we ought to use the peace of God at all times, especially
among others. This is because the word of God proclaims, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they
cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is
the image of God.” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
For this reason, we ought to proclaim that
Jesus is the way of the life and the truth (John 14:6) and be the light of the nations
and the world in Christ Jesus.
You are the light
of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people
light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives
light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before
others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in
heaven. (Matthew 5:14-16)
You are a chosen
race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that
you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into
his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)
All this is from
God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of
reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself,
not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of
reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal
through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. (2 Corinthians 5:19-20)
