“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view
of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing
to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of
this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be
able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect
will.” – Romans 12:1-2 NIV
First of all, we ought to know that the
worldly living and kingdom-living are so different. Many people usually think
that Jesus Christ is the One who would fulfill their prayer requests in
anytime, or they might believe that Christian-living would be so much
comfortable than the ordinary living. However, we have to know that those thoughts
are not completely true. Nevertheless, it is true that Jesus Christ is the One
who fulfills our needs or prayer requests, only if we pray according to God’s
word (John 15:7) and the will of God (1 John 5:14-15). Furthermore, the word of
God states, “Now to him who is able to do
immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at
work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout
all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21) Secondly, Christian-living
does not make us to live more comfortably; it is difficult living that we have
to sacrifice (Romans 12:1) and deny ourselves until the
end of the age (Matthew 16:24-27). However, it does satisfy
us in the way that we have eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord and Saviour. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Therefore we do
not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being
renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us
an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is
seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is
unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:16-18)
Since, then, you
have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly
things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When
Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
(Colossians 3:1-4)
Therefore, we have to overcome the world (1 John 5:1-5) and crucify our worldly
nature, and then we have to live according to the Spirit of God (Galatians 5:24-25). This is because the
Spirit of God has been poured into us to advocate us to obey/walk/follow God
until the end of the age through Jesus Christ (John 14:15-27; 2 Peter 1:3-11). “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for
all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
(1 Timothy 4:8) Moreover, the word of God
announces, “For those who are led by the
Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make
you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received
brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The
Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we
are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if
indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
(Romans 8:14-17)
Do not love this
world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not
have the love of the Father in you. For
the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything
we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the
Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with
everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live
forever. (1 John 2:15-17)
Don’t be misled—you
cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you plant. Those
who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death
from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest
everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.
At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore,
whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to
those in the family of faith. (Galatians 6:7-10)
