“Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may
your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” – Psalm 143:10 NIV
We need to pray like what Psalm 143:10 states follow the Spirit every
moment of life (John 14:15-27), even though we are not in
the situation that David had. This is because all of us have not been created
to live comfortable and satisfactory lives but to be the images of God until
the end of the age (Genesis 1:27). “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the
image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified;
those he justified, he also glorified.” (Romans 8:29-30) In fact, we also have been
made to be the temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16). In addition to this, 1
Corinthians 6:19-20 proclaims, “Do you
not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom
you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price.
Therefore honor God with your bodies.” This means we have to crucify our
sinful nature and really abide in the Spirit of God (Galatians 5:24-25), due to the fact that we
are not be able to serve both God and the world (Matthew 6:24) because of their
contradiction (Galatians 5:17). Thus, the word of God
declares,
Therefore, I urge
you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a
living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his
good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)
Furthermore, Jesus Christ wants us to have
mindset of the righteousness, the will and the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). Therefore, He states, “This, then, is how you should
pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.’” (Matthew 6:9-10) This is because the will of
God is more righteous than our will (Romans 11:33-36) as His thoughts and ways are
higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9). Overall, God wants us to do
His will because He actually wants to have us in His eternal kingdom of heaven from
the end of the age (Matthew 7:21).
Yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came
and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all
things came and through whom we live. (1 Corinthians 8:6)
As for me, I often
worry about doing the will of God until the rest of my life. This is because my
top-most wish is what Psalm 27:4 states—“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell
in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the
Lord and to seek him in his temple.” In addition, I feel that I do not
fulfill it for each day of my life. However, I trust that the Spirit of God is
leading me what He wants to do (Proverbs 3:5-8). Moreover, I have been
saved not through works but through faith in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:8-10).
At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by
all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated
and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior
appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because
of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the
Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our
Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having
the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to
stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to
devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and
profitable for everyone. (Titus 3:3-8)
