“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty
hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” – 1 Peter 5:6 NIV
The word of God calls us to humble
ourselves before the Lord, the Creator (Genesis 1:1; Psalm 24:1) and our heavenly Father (Ephesians 4:4-6). This is because He is
just too powerful to us in positive ways (Jeremiah 32:27). There is the power of the
forgiveness (1 John 1:9), the redemption (Ephesians 1:7), the grace (Ephesians 2:8), the mercy, the love of God
(Titus 3:4-5), the justification, the peace,
the hope (Romans 5:1-5), the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13; Acts 1:8), the prayer (Mark 11:24), the Word (Hebrews 4:12), etc. “For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble
themselves will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12) This probably means we are
not able to manage our lives according to our own sinful nature. Therefore, we
have to be in Jesus as He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in
Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23) Hence, we have to deny
ourselves (Matthew 16:24-27) and have to go into the
narrow road rather than the wider one (Matthew 7:13-14). Because following Jesus
Christ until the end of the age would be too hard for us, God has poured His
Spirit (John 14:15-27) into us to advocate us to
transform our desires and passions into godliness (2 Peter 1:3-4) and to help us to walk in
His laws, statutes and ways. “For
physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things,
holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8) This is the reason why Jesus
has said that it is for our advantage that He was going away to be crucified (John 16:7-13).
Don’t be
misled—you cannot mock the justice of God. You will always harvest what you
plant. Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest
decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the
Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit. So let’s not get tired of
doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing
if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do
good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith. (Galatians 6:7-10)
Do not love this
world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not
have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for
physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our
achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this
world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave.
But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. (1 John 2:15-17)
